Summer 1995, three friends who were really into music decide to start a band... you've heard that a million times I know, it's the way most bands start... the difference here is these guys were well into their 20's and have never played an instrument or even tried to do anything in a band before!!!! A recipe for disaster I'm certain.
Don had the most musical talent since he could at least strum his guitar, Doug had never picked up a bass or any guitar before that fateful day and Glenn.. well Glenn definitely never sang or played in a band either! The first days in the basement were comical to say the least but somehow, someway they got their shit together to actually form songs. Playing with no drummer and screaming over badly played instruments in Glenn's basement was the beginning of the band Squiggy, who at the time actually comically called themselves Portly. I'm not really sure how it happened or what the heck Joel was thinking but Joel stopped by Doug's record store to buy some Warzone records and they got to talking and he offered to play drums for the "band". The guys were in shock, they've seen Joel play in a band called Anotherence and knew the kid could "REALLY” play. But, the guys weren’t about to turn him down. Moving from the basement to an actual place to play definitely helped and it made it a lot easier to take it seriously. Somehow these simple songs started to actually sound good! The name change came about because, well they didn’t really have one... sitting around one day just spitting out names someone jokingly said the name “SQUIGGY” and it stuck. The conversation went something like “Squiggy? hmmm well no one else is gonna ever name their band that so that’ll be unique”.

The band was suppose to hold it together to play a show or two at a local American Legion hall but somehow it just kept going and going and going. Squiggy played countless, I mean really countless shows with just about any bigtime or small time band you could think of. The music progressed, the band got faster and heavier but they never really changed the core value that they started with.... “Make it about the message and not the music” is something Doug and Don always said. Disaster struck when Glenn needed to take a leave of absence and Squiggy really thought that was gonna be it but they had already commited to a 7” on Headache Records and another on Squigtone Records so everyone decided that Doug and Don would just sing the songs. It worked and it worked really well... people seemed to like it better, the songs got harder and faster and the topics got touchier and touchier. Squiggy was never one to shy away from politics and opinions, often confused people would call them “hate rock” or “white power” but the band laughed it off. Having an opinion or being pissed off about something or someone doesn’t make you a nazi. The PC police only fueled the band’s following. Disaster number 2 struck when Joel moved on to other bands, he was a core part of the sound of the band but they plugged on without him finding some really great people to sit in with the band. So it went, the band released more records and CDs and the whole time the band’s sound changed into something unique... a mix of early American hardcore, 80’s UK punk, Oi! and Streetpunk.

How did it end... no one really knows, things were going great toward the end when Gabe from The Oi! Scouts/Outsiders came in to play bass and Doug moved to second guitar it finally solidified the heavy sound the band wanted by having both Don and Doug play guitar. Another drummer lost to obscurity and the band just dissolved. Family, marriage, work, commitments all came first. The band recorded one last recording session before calling it quits, four of these songs can be found on the “Songs About Hate...” re-issue on Working Class Records and there are still a couple more unreleased songs that will probably show up on the “A Look Back At Rebellion” collection coming out this Spring on Working Class also.

There’s still always hope for the band to start up again... if we could just get Doug and Don on the same side of the continent it would be a start! .... the end
